Marvellous Me!

A very warm welcome to the Reception class blog, particularly if you are new to St. Dominic Primary School. We have had a busy start to the academic year with the class learning the rules and routines of school and getting to know each other. The children have made a great start and have been coming into the classroom happy and confidently. You should be very proud of them.

This half term our topic is 'Marvellous Me'. We are learning all about Ourselves. We have been thinking about our families and what makes us special and unique.

We painted a large picture of a member of the class (see photo) and named and labelled the parts of our own bodies. In our Literacy lessons we have read the book “Once there were Giants” by Martin Waddell. The children talked about and recorded events from the past and present in their own lives and made some decisions about their future lives!

Our RE topic is Myself. We have been thinking about our names and our friends names. We know that God knows us all and knows our names and loves every one of us. We created self-portraits for the RE board in the hall. In the month ofOctober we think of Mary and the children are learning to say The Hail Mary in class. It would be helpful if you could support them with this at home too.

In Maths, we have been learning to count to 20, using songs and our class number line to help us. We have been thinking about the best ways to count and strategies that we may use to help us when counting. For example, place objects in a line before counting, using our ‘counting finger’, move objects once counted, etc. Linked to our “Ourselves” topic we have worked in pairs to draw around the outline of our body shapes and used non-standard objects to measure with. We also introduced the children to a tape measure.

Thank you for the support you have given your children with their reading. The children are really beginning to see themselves as readers and have been learning their high frequency words. Please remember to write your comments in your child’s reading records.

We have been blessed with beautiful weather these first few weeks and so we have spent lots of the time learning outdoors. Here are some of the things we have been doing.

A reminder:

Please label EVERYTHING with your child’s name! We spend a lot of time teaching the children to be responsible for their belongings, but things do go astray and it’s so much easier to reunite lost items with their owner if they are labelled. If you use a pen to label, please keep a check as names often end up washing out and you may need to re-label.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Reception team.
