Spring 1 week 4

This week's theme has been The Three Little Pigs. We enjoyed looking at some excellent show and tell items, including some very stable looking pigs houses! In Literacy we retold this story through storyboards and drama. In EAD and UW we made our own pig houses to represent straw, sticks and bricks.

In maths we revisited looking at time and introduced looking at a clock face. We listened to the story 'What's the time Mr Wolf?' and played this game outside. We focused on O'Clock times and also explored looking at half past times as we were time telling super stars.

"This is time we start going to lunch, I found out by looking out our school clock!"
In PE we visited the bear cave in 'We're going on a bear hunt' and we saw the bear! The children performed some very expressive movements and thoroughly enjoyed performing the dance from beginning to end.

In RE the children wrote about their favourite celebrations and placed these in the centre of a reflective celebration circle.

Here are some other things we have got up to this week:

Next week we will be looking at stories from other cultures and in measurement in maths.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Spring 1: week 3

We have yet again had another enjoyable week in reception. The children especially enjoyed having parents in each morning and sharing their learning journals. It was lovely to see their faces light up showing you what they have been getting up to.

Our theme this week was Traditional Tales, we focused particularly on The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The children retold the story through whole class and small group drama, this helped them learn it off by heart. Furthermore, they created some wonderful storyboards and their own books.

In maths we concentrated on subtraction. We practised using the correct signs within our number sentences.

During RE we role-played the story when Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple.

In PE we continued retelling the story of 'We're going on a bear hunt'. We split ourselves into two halves and watched each others performances and gave each other feedback.

Here are some other things we got up to this week:

Making up our own fairy tales on the ipads

reading 'real' and 'nonsense' words.

Preview of learning for next week:
Our theme for next week is The Three Little Pigs. In Literacy we will be learning this story and retelling it through role-play and writing. We will also be swapping classrooms and sharing stories with the Nursery staff.  In maths we will be concentrating on language related to time and exploring clocks.

Have a lovely weekend

Spring 1: week 2

We have had enjoyable second week of term and the children have got back into the swing of reception.

In literacy we looked at non-fiction books and learnt about the characteristics they contain such as facts and information, contents pages and headings. In maths we revisited 3D shapes and properties. The children were shape experts by the end of the week.

Here are other things we got up to this week:
Making 50+ 'cubes' out of play dough

We look forward to seeing you at 8.30 a.m. each day next week to share learning journals.

Have a lovely weekend

Spring 1: week 1

A warm welcome back to reception, we hope you had a lovely Christmas. Once again, thank you for all your well wishes, cards and gifts given to the reception staff.

We have  had a week full of activities and lots of learning. Our new topic is 'Books and stories' which the children are already enjoying. We began by looking at the book 'The Jolly Postman' who delivers letters to many traditional tale characters. In literacy we wrote letters in the roles of these characters. For wxample an apology letter to the three bears from Goldilocks.

In Mathematics we looked at 'estimating', which helped our understanding of quantities. We had some very accurate estimations!

In RE we began our new topic of 'Celebrations' . If you have not done so already,
could you please bring in a photo of a family celebration for your child's learning journal,

In PE we began a new unit around the story 'We're going on a bear hunt'. The children learnt the initial actions to make a sequence to go alongside the narration of the story.

Here are some photos of what we got up to this week:
