Autumn 1: week 8

This week we looked at Diwali. We enjoyed learning about differences and similarities between the festival of light  and our own celebrations. We listened to the story of Rama and Sita and we created our own Rangoli patterns and lanterns. We also wrote about what we learnt about Diwali.

In maths we looked further at the symmetry of rangoli patterns and other forms of symmetry:

In your homework books you will find your normal maths homework, alongside a set of high frequency and 'tricky' words to practise during the forthcoming weeks. There is also an observation sheet with instructions to be handed in with your homework the first week back.

We have had an excellent first half term in reception. The children have all tried very hard and have continually progressed since their first day at school. I hope you all have a restful and enjoyable half term and we look forward to seeing you in November!

Autumn 1: week 7

This week during 'show and tell' time we looked at our favourite foods. We enjoyed listening to all of the tasty foods we love.

In maths we focused on weighing. We started by weighing ingredients to make our own gingerbread men. Throughout the week we continued to weigh different objects and predict which would be the heaviest or lightest. We checked using scales and discussed which side was the heaviest or lightest and why.

We later decorated the gingerbread men to look like ourselves:

In literacy we wrote a list of the ingredients and equipment we used to make our gingerbread men.

In RE we looked further at Baptisms and designed our own Baptismal candles with signs and symbols.

In PE we added further elements to our dance sequence and we spilt into two groups to watch each other perform.

Here are some other things we got up to this week:

Preview of learning next week:

Next week we will be looking at Diwali, including symmetrical Rangoli patterns during maths.

Have a great weekend!

Autumn 1: week 6

We have had another busy and fun filled week in reception.

The theme this week was 'our feet'. During our show and tell time we had a vast array of shoes, socks, footballs and other things related to our feet, which prompted some excellent language and conversation opportunities.

During Literacy and Understanding the World we wrote lists about places we visit using our feet in our local environments. We had a look at our school on a map and spotted all the places nearby.

In phonics we have continued to learn new letter sounds and consolidate sounds we have already learnt. We are continually practising segmenting words within our writing and blending within our reading. We are also taking time to practise our letter formation during our phonic lessons and when using our special handwriting books.

In maths we looked at repeating patterns, which is reflected in your homework this week. We looked at patterns involving shapes, colours, movements and noticed patterns in ourselves when standing side by side.

In RE we continued our topic of 'Welcome' We learnt about Baptism and how a child is welcomed into God's family. We all reenacted a Baptism, playing the roles of people who would be present:

In PSED we talked about what makes us special and what is special about others.

Here are some other things we got up to this week during Child Initiated Learning time:

Preview of learning for next week:
Next week our theme is 'my favourite food'. The children will have the opportunity to make some of their own food and weigh the ingredients. In maths we will continue to focus on weighing and measuring. In literacy we will write about the recipe we used to make our food.

Have a great weekend!

Autumn 1 week 5

We have had another wonderful week in reception. We saw a vast array of everyone's favourite toys during 'show and tell' time and we got to know even more about each other.

We enjoyed watching the Harvest assembly today and we talked  about farmers and foods in class. In relation to this we shared the story 'Handa's Surprise' this and looked at Handa's seven fruits:

In literacy we wrote about our favourite part and sequenced the story.

During Busy Fingers time we also drew some still life drawings of Handa's seven fruits:

During RE we each designed a miniature 'welcome poster' to go on our RE board for our new topic 'Welcome':

In maths we looked at 2D shapes and their properties. We did many practical activities such as describing shapes to our friends using a 'feely bag' and also using the 'talking telephones'.

In PE we continued our dance sequence. We also used shape mats to find 2D shapes and follow positional language instructions.

Here are some other things we have got up to this week:

Preview of learning for next week:

In Literacy we will write about 'our feet' and where we go in our local area.

In Maths we will look at patterns.

See you all next week!
