Last two weeks of term

We have had a brilliant fun filled last two weeks of term, full of celebrations.

Here are a few things we have got up to:

After learning lots of songs, we performed 'Christmas spells Christmas' to our family and friends. The children were absolutely fantastic and it was a joy to watch. As Mrs O'Brien said, it is hard to believe they are only four and five years old.

Following on with the Christmas celebrations we enjoyed 'Strictly X Factor', music concerts and our Christmas lunch. On Thursday we thoroughly enjoyed our class Christmas party. Thank you all very much for your food contributions. The children devoured all the food you brought in! We then played pass the parcel, musical statues and sleeping lions. We even has a surprise visit from Father Christmas:

Next half term our Topic will be 'Books and stories' For the first week of show and tell could you please bring in your favourite book.

Thank you all very much for your Christmas cards and gifts you generously gave to the reception staff. We look forward to opening them on Christmas day.

Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Autumn 2: Week 5

This week we continued to get into the festive spirit. In RE we retold the Nativity story through role-play and sequencing pictures. We also made our own class Advent wreath using leaves we found in our school woods

Our theme this week was patterns. We looked at rhyming patterns and made our own caterpillar repeating patterns in relation to the story 'The very hungry caterpillar'. In maths we sequenced the days of the week related to this story.

In literacy we received our Book Trust book packs, which contained 'Hairy Maclary'. We enjoyed listening to the rhymes in the story and we created our own rhyming strings.

We also practised our Christmas performance and you will find information about this and the class Christmas party in your child's book bag today.

Here are some other things we got up to this week:

Have a lovely weekend!

Autumn 2: week 4

Our theme this week has been Birthdays and we explored the meaning of Advent and Jesus' Birthday.
In literacy and RE we wrote about the onset of Advent.

We also began learning some of our Christmas songs for our Christmas performance. We definitely have many budding singers.

We enjoyed making our own Christmas tree decorations and placing some of these on our school Christmas tree for 3K's Advent assembly.

In maths we looked at money for 'Financial Capability' week. This was a tricky concept to grasp but we were all money superstars by the end of the week.

During PE we enjoyed an indoor athletics session. The organiser commented on how well behaved reception were and their knowledge of what makes our bodies healthy:

Here are some other things we got up to this week:

Next week in literacy we will be looking at books from our bookstart packs that the children will receive. In maths we will be reviewing all the things we have learnt so far this Autumn term.
We will continue to practise for our Christmas performance and create some more Christmas arts and crafts.

The travelling crib will also begin its journey at the start of Advent next week...

Have a lovely weekend!

Autumn 2: week 3

This week we learnt about 'beat the bad' week and 'colour'. We read several 'Elmer' stories and explored mixing colours to make our own patchwork Elmers:

At the start of the week we had a visiting Author who came into reception. The children were all enthralled by meeting an author and they all said how much they love reading.

In maths we learnt about addition number sentences and wepractised making the + and = signs

In literacy we read several Elmer stories and we found words that we could make rhyme with actions the elephants made e.g. hop, bop, pop.

In PSED, Elmer demonstrated that we should celebrate that everyone is different and unique. We ended our week on 'beat the bad' by attending a lovely assembly performed by year 5 demonstrating that we should treat each other with kindness.

Here are some other things we have got up to this week:

Preview of learning for next week:

Our theme for next week is Birthdays, which is also our new RE topic. Please bring in a photograph or object from a Birthday for show and tell next week.  Next week is also financial capability week so reception will learning about different coins and their values. In literacy we will be writing about Birthdays and the onset of Advent.

Have a lovely weekend!

Autumn 2: week 2

We have had another busy and fun week in reception. Our theme this week was Autumn. We enjoyed going on an autumn walk, collecting autumn objects and learning about the changes that happen during Autumn. We used the leaves we collected to make leaf artwork in relation to the story 'Leaf man':

During Literacy we wrote our own extract about Leafman and attempted simple sentences explaining where the wind might take Leaf man.

During Maths we focused on 3D shapes, we explored the edges, corners and faces of 3D shapes and identified that the faces are 2D shape names that we already knew. Here we are describing 3D Shapes to each other:

Digging for 3D shapes

Here are some other things we have got up to this week:

Next week we will look at the story 'Elmer' in relation to our theme of the week being colour and anti bullying week. In maths we will be focusing on adding and taking away.

Have a lovely weekend!
